The Demand

Building Plymouth’s aim is to connect local people to jobs in the construction industry in Plymouth. But, why is it so important to get local people into a career in construction? Did you know that:

• Over the next five years, construction employment will be the highest it’s ever been
• Construction currently employs some 3 million people – that’s 10% of the population
• 32,400 new jobs are expected in the next five years in the South West
• 10,000 of these new jobs are predicted to be construction jobs in Plymouth
• 60% of jobs created will be in the design and management sector, including design, engineering, surveying and management

With such a skills gap to fill, and with the average age of a construction worker at 55, there is high demand for skilled workers in the construction industry and this demand is only set to grow. Career opportunities span from senior and executive managers to painters and decorators, IT and technical roles to bricklayers and quantity surveyors, so there really is something for everyone.
