Devonport Royal Dockyard supporting the local construction industry to create new skills and jobs

Building Plymouth has hosted its second virtual Meet the Buyer event, this time with Project Sponsor Babcock.

Once again the event was very well attended by local construction and built environment employers with over 100 attendees logging in to find out more about the future of Devonport Royal Dockyard and the part they could play in its new programme of major infrastructure projects and ongoing capital programme.

Meet the Buyer – Babcock and the opportunities at Devonport Royal Dockyard

The Babcock event was designed to give contractors, consultants and specialists an understanding of how the dockyard is upgrading to meet the changing demands of the Royal Navy and to give an insight into how local small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) could play a part in the future of one of Plymouth’s major economic powerhouses.

Through delivery of this major infrastructure investment, Babcock is playing a key role in supporting Resurgam, Plymouth City Council’s economic recovery programme which focuses on local spending to boost the economy and developing the skills of the local workforce to support our city’s growth industries.

Building Babcock and the procurement plan – key speakers at the event

Babcock’s Steve Smith, Business and Strategy Director for Major Infrastructure Projects started proceedings and talked about Babcock’s major infrastructure projects programme and the company’s commitment to creating social value through contract award.

Stephen Adamson, Commercial Director for Infrastructure then discussed Babcock’s procurement frameworks and most importantly how local SMEs can get involved.

Building Plymouth’s Emma Hewitt closed the event by outlining the critical focus on outcome-led procurement for local skills and employment, which was followed by Q&A and next steps for Building Plymouth Meet the Buyer engagement.

Steve Smith, Business and Strategy Director for Major Infrastructure Projects said: “We would like to thank Building Plymouth for helping us to engage so positively with the local construction community. This is our second Meet the Buyer event which demonstrates our commitment to investing in Plymouth through our major infrastructure programme and we welcome this opportunity to support the city’s economic recovery.”
