Well done and good luck Chris!

We’re so proud to announce that Chris Watts, our Building Plymouth Technical Apprentice of the Year Winner 2020 is now a finalist in the Constructing Excellence South West – G4C Future Leader award.

A model apprentice

Chris works for Obedair and joined the company straight from A levels. Within a very short space of time he became an integral part of the team, fitting in with their ethos and culture.

His progression in the company has impressed everyone. He showed an immediate flair for quantity surveying and commercial management, which he became interested in during a talk by Building Plymouth’s Emma Hewitt at DHSB, when he was a student there.

An example of Chris’s impressive capability is that while working on a £2.5 million job over nine months, he continued to complete his surveying and commercial management course, and brought the project to a close within budget and to every stakeholders satisfaction, an achievement that normally on takes place in the third or fourth year of a commercial apprentice.

A great spokesperson for working in construction

Not only a stellar apprentice, Chris is also heavily involved in Obedair’s social and community activities, giving his time up to support others. He is part of the Obedair team that regularly makes food and delivers the Soup Run to homeless people within Plymouth. He also helped deliver supplies and clothes to Shekinah at Christmas to support their annual Christmas lunch.

A great ambassador for the construction industry

Chris has spoken at a Building Plymouth Summit in a Q&A session with Emma to promote opportunities in construction and was so successful that he followed this with another talk to sixth form students at Hele’s School. This then got him another gig at Plymstock School for years 7-11 to tell them all about the great opportunities in construction and how they can get involved. What better than hearing from another young person about how great our industry is!

We wish Chris the very best of luck. He’s proved himself to be the best in Plymouth, we hope he gets recognised as the best in the South West!
