WINNER: Connor Byrne, The Ron Simmonds Construction Trade Apprentice of the Year 2026
Congratulations to Connor Byrne, the well-deserved winner of The Ron Simmonds Construction Trade Apprentice of the Year Award 2026.
Connor is currently completing his Level 2 Groundworker apprenticeship with LARC Construction in partnership with Skills Group. Since joining the company in May 2025, he has progressed steadily from a Level 1 Study Programme through to the full Level 2 apprenticeship — a journey marked by determination, consistency, and rapid professional growth.
Upon receiving the award, Connor said “I’m still in shock. Skills Group have been incredibly supportive, and I can’t thank my employer LARC Construction enough. My team are truly amazing, and I couldn’t ask for better people to work with. I’m loving every second of my apprenticeship, and it’s all thanks to them.”
From the very beginning, Connor has shown a genuine enthusiasm for Groundworks. His drive to learn and improve every day has made a noticeable impact both in and outside the classroom. On site, he has quickly developed the capability to take on a wide range of skilled tasks, excelling particularly in drainage installation, excavation work, and the safe setup of trench shoring systems. His confidence working around mobile plant — and stepping in as a banksman when needed — shows maturity, strong situational awareness, and a clear understanding of best practice.
Health and Safety is an area where Connor stands out. He not only applies safe working procedures to his own tasks but actively supports colleagues in maintaining high standards on site. His organised approach, reliability, and attention to detail have established him as someone the team can trust — a quality often highlighted by those who work closely with him.
His commitment has also been formally recognised by LARC Construction, where he received the company’s internal Reward and Recognition Award for his ongoing hard work. His onsite mentor, Mark McMahon, speaks highly of his attitude: “His enthusiasm hasn’t changed since day one. He works hard, actively looks for tasks, and is always ready to lend a hand. He has become the third man of our team.”
Connor’s journey has not been without personal challenges. Supported by LSF during his time on the study programme, he continued to show a positive mindset and a willingness to grow. His resilience has been a defining factor in his progress, and it shines through in both his academic and practical work.
At college, Connor has become a trusted peer, regularly sought out by fellow learners for advice and support. He is always willing to help others, while also engaging openly and constructively with his trainers. His technical ability, paired with his natural leadership qualities, has made him a role model within his cohort.
His achievements were further recognised when he was presented with the “Hard Work Award” at his workplace — a testament to his consistency, attitude, and dedication to always doing his best. Across every setting, Connor brings together technical skill, initiative, teamwork, and personal resilience, making him an apprentice who continually surpasses expectations.
Beyond his own development, Connor’s willingness to share his knowledge sets him apart. Whether guiding a peer through a task, supporting new learners, or assisting tutors, he contributes to an environment where others feel confident to ask questions and improve. His approachable manner and professionalism make him someone both learners and staff rely on.
From the outset of his apprenticeship, Connor has shown the ability to take ownership of his learning, rise to challenges, and proactively seek opportunities to develop. His hard work and commitment to progression make it clear why he has been chosen as this year’s Ron Simmonds Construction Trade Apprentice of the Year.
