Building Plymouth hosts construction careers drop in sessions at Skills Launchpad Plymouth
Building Plymouth recently hosted a series of three construction careers drop in sessions at Skills Launchpad Plymouth, bringing together local employers, training providers and residents interested in starting or progressing a career in the construction industry.
January’s sessions were supported by Focus Training, JEM Scaffolding and Devon Contractors, providing attendees with direct access to industry insight, live job opportunities and funded training pathways. Their involvement offered valuable, real world perspectives on what working in the sector looks like today.
The drop ins welcomed people at all stages of their employment journey—from those with no prior construction experience to individuals already holding CSCS cards and looking to take their next step. Attendees had the opportunity to speak directly with employers about entry level roles, site expectations, career progression routes and work experience opportunities. Training providers were also on hand to discuss funded skills bootcamps in areas such as electrical installation, plumbing and retrofit, helping residents understand the various pathways available.
The impact of these sessions has been strong. Many participants left with clear next steps, including referrals into training, employer introductions and follow up conversations about work experience and live vacancies. For several attendees, this was their first chance to engage face to face with construction employers—an important step in building confidence and removing barriers to entering the sector.
Reflecting on the sessions, Gareth, Building Plymouth Coordinator, said: “Working closely with Building Plymouth members continues to be incredibly valuable. Their willingness to give time, share knowledge and engage directly with local residents plays a key role in strengthening Plymouth’s construction pipeline and supporting people into sustainable employment.”
