Celebrating National Manufacturing Day

National Manufacturing Day is a celebration of the people, skills and businesses that make the UK’s manufacturing sector such an important part of the economy. It is also an opportunity to showcase the wide range of careers and pathways available across the industry, from engineering and technology to production, logistics and business support.

Manufacturing plays a significant role in Plymouth, with the sector providing just over 13% of the city’s jobs and supporting a diverse range of careers. Home to many innovative and globally recognised manufacturers, Plymouth has built a strong reputation as a leading centre for advanced manufacturing and engineering.

Our friends at Plymouth Manufacturers’ Group (PMG) play an important role in supporting this thriving sector. A network of more than 50 local manufacturing businesses, PMG works to share expertise, encourage innovation and support the growth of the industry. Through initiatives such as Plymouth Makes, the group helps raise awareness of manufacturing careers, supports skills development and promotes Plymouth as a leading manufacturing city.

The opportunities available through the sector were highlighted earlier this year when PMG and Building Plymouth joined forces to celebrate local talent at the annual Apprentice of the Year Awards. Nearly 60 apprentices from Plymouth’s manufacturing and construction sectors were recognised for their achievements, showcasing the skills, dedication and career development opportunities available through apprenticeships.

As part of this year’s National Manufacturing Day celebrations, Plymouth manufacturer Rittal-CSM is opening its factory doors virtually via LinkedIn here Throughout the week, the company will be showcasing the people, skills and hard work that help bring its products to life every day, offering an insight into the teamwork, innovation and technology behind modern manufacturing.
