Connecting people with opportunities: Building Plymouth jobs and training sessions
Building Plymouth’s Tuesday sector drop-in sessions have continued to connect local people with employers, training providers and support organisations from across the construction industry.
Over the last few months, we’ve welcomed a wide range of guests to our Tuesday sector sessions, giving customers the opportunity to gain careers advice, explore training options, learn about different construction roles and, in some cases, secure direct employment opportunities.
Support organisations including Shekinah and Clarion Futures shared information on training programmes, employability support and construction bootcamps. Their sessions were particularly valuable for people looking to build confidence, develop new skills or take the first step back into education, training or work.
Training providers such as Skills Group highlighted apprenticeship opportunities and routes into the industry, helping customers understand the qualifications and experience needed to pursue careers in the trades.
Employers including JEM Scaffolding, Ian Williams, Classic Builders, The Plym Group, AECOM and Vistry provided an insight into the wide variety of careers available across the sector. From site-based trades and housebuilding through to design, engineering, project management and professional services, customers were able to learn more about the many pathways construction has to offer.
The sessions have also delivered some fantastic outcomes. Both JEM Scaffolding and The Plym Group offered job trials to customers they met through the programme, while Vistry shared customer CVs with their wider subcontractor network to help create additional employment opportunities. Employers have also provided valuable feedback on applications and recruitment processes, helping customers better understand what businesses are looking for when hiring.
These sessions continue to demonstrate the value of bringing employers and jobseekers together in an informal setting. As well as learning about vacancies, apprenticeships and training, customers gain first-hand insight into an industry that offers more than 180 different career pathways.
